English as a New Language instruction helps students who are learning English for the first time, or students who are bilingual and are still developing their English skills.
New students whose first language is not English are given an interview and a test to determine if they should receive ENL support.
The ENL teacher provides either push-in or pull-out ENL classes (or a combination). These classes focus on learning all the language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) using academic content. The teacher works closely with classroom teachers to help students' individual needs.
ENL students take the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) each spring to track their progress in learning English. Eventually they will test out of ENL services.
